Know who's doing the work.

Your return should not disappear into a workflow staffed by people you've never met. Harbor Trust keeps the relationship simple: clear scope, a price before work starts, and a CPA accountable for the finished product. If something changes the scope, we tell you before it changes the bill.

Questions people ask before calling a CPA

How much does a CPA charge to do taxes?

It depends on the return you actually have, not a count of forms. We confirm the scope and the fee in writing before any work starts. Cleanup, catch-up and reconciliation work to get books tax-ready is $150 per hour, estimated and approved by you before it begins.

Does Florida have a state income tax?

Not for individuals. Florida has no personal income tax, so most households file only a federal return. C corporations do owe Florida corporate income tax, and if you work for an employer in another state or moved here mid-year, that other state may still expect a return.

Do I need a CPA or can I use a regular tax preparer?

A CPA is licensed by the state, held to continuing education and ethics rules, and can represent you before the IRS if a notice or audit comes up. At Harbor Trust the CPA who prepares your return is the one who answers for it.

What should I do if I get a letter from the IRS?

Do not ignore it, and do not pay or reply before you understand it. The notice number in the corner tells you what the IRS thinks is wrong, and the letter gives a response deadline. Send us a copy and we will tell you what it means and what the response should be.

I have not filed taxes in a few years. What do I do?

File, and start with the most recent years. The IRS generally looks for the last six years of returns, and a refund can only be claimed within three years of the original due date, so waiting can cost money. We rebuild the missing years from your records and wage transcripts.

When are quarterly estimated tax payments due?

April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 of the following year, moved to the next business day when a date falls on a weekend or holiday. If you are self-employed or nothing is being withheld, we calculate whether you need them and give you the amounts.

Should my LLC elect to be taxed as an S corporation?

Sometimes. It depends on profit, a reasonable salary for your role, payroll cost and your own filing picture. It is an analysis we scope and quote as a flat fee before you file the election.

Does filing an extension give me more time to pay?

No. An extension gives you until October 15 to file, but any tax owed is still due in April. Paying an estimate with the extension keeps penalties and interest down.

What documents do I need to bring for my tax return?

Last year's return, your W-2s, 1099s and 1098s, and access to the accounts the business runs on, plus payroll records if you have employees. That is usually enough to quote the work within one business day.

Can you do my taxes if I do not live near Brandon?

Yes. Clients meet in person at the Brandon office by appointment or work entirely through the secure portal, and the same pricing applies wherever you are.
